Summer is here, and let’s face it, it’s hot! However, that doesn’t mean the fishing isn’t still totally worth it (some of the best fishing happens in the summer!). That being said, when you are fishing in Venice, LA this summer, you do need to take every precaution to protect yourself from the heat and the sun. Here are a few helpful tips on what to do and bring on your inshore or offshore fishing adventure…
Don’t Forget the Sunscreen: While there’s some shade, there’s not enough to cover you all day long especially when you’ve got rod and reel in hand. Make sure to bring sunscreen and a lot of it! An SPF of 30 or greater is recommended by the American Academy of Dermatology who also suggests to reapply liberally throughout the day.
Wear Protective Attire: While sunscreen is a must, your attire should really be your first line of defense. Opt for lightweight clothing (many have UV ray protection in the material), hats, and sunglasses.
Drink A LOT of Water: We’ve got the beverages covered, so all you need to do is remember to drink them. A good tip to remember is to drink small amounts of cool water frequently (about one cup every 20 minutes). Avoid alcohol, coffee, tea, and caffeinated soft drinks – all of which cause dehydration.
Eat! While it’s important stay hydrated, it’s just as important to eat a light, well-balanced meal before and during your fishing trip. Make sure to eat a good breakfast and don’t forget to eat while you’re on the boat. Avoid salty foods as they can cause dehydration.
Monitor Weather Conditions: Pay close attention to the temperature and humidity levels throughout your fishing trip. If the conditions become unbearable, you may want to call it a day.
Know the Signs of Heat Overexposure: Pale skin, muscle cramps, feeling tired and weak, altered mental status (confusion or disorientation), headache, loss of consciousness, nausea, or vomiting are the eights signs of heat overexposure. Make sure everyone on the boat can recognize these signs.
Know the Risk Factors: Certain medical conditions may require extreme caution when fishing in the heat, some of which include: age, pregnancy, obesity, inadequate rest, medications, or a previous heat-related injury.
